Is there anything more decadent than an afternoon nap (or, even more indulgent, a mid-morning nap)? We didn't think so, which is why this week, we asked our bloggers:
Do you nap? Long ones or short ones? Do you have a favorite time of day/week to nap? Do you have any vivid memories of napping as a child?
Whenever I tell my friends that I nap regularly, they laugh at me. So, I'm not sure I should be sharing this information with the world, but since I think naps need support I suppose I have to speak up. I LOVE NAPS! I am a freelance writer and editor, so I have a very flexible schedule and I mainly work from home. I take a nap almost every day around 3:00 pm, unless I'm on deadline and have to skip it and work. I always set my alarm to go off 20 minutes after I crawl under the covers, so that I don't risk sleeping the afternoon away. I wake up feeling refreshed and relaxed and ready to get back to work. In general, I think my naps make me a much happier person. The one downside to my napping schedule are the days when I work in my clients' offices. Around 3pm my body starts to shut down and I have to get extra caffeine in me just to stay awake during my regular naptime. Yes, I realize that I sound like I'm still in kindergarten ...
As a child, I was a really bad napper. I drove my mom and my preschool teachers absolutely insane. As an adult, not only am I great at napping, but I love to do it. Nothing makes me happier than a long walk after brunch followed by a nap. That's pretty much my dream Sunday, and when I get to do it, I start the week much more refreshed and relaxed.
I bought this old-fashioned, pinup sort of postcard once, with a woman in lingerie in bed, saying "Damn right I'm good in bed, I can sleep all day!" I've never been able to mail that postcard to anyone because I think it's so funny and so true. I love naps! I love the weekends because they mean a nap, especially Saturday (napping on Sunday is riskier because if you sleep too long, you'll be up all night fretting about your Monday to-do list). My husband and I constantly disagree on where to nap -- he prefers napping in bed, I prefer napping on our big L-shaped couch, I think because I have such warm-fuzzy memories of taking naps on the couch cuddled up with my Mom when I was a little kid.
With a toddler running around it's hard for me to nap when she naps because I get so much done around the house while she's sleeping! However, if I do nap I usually nap as long as she does ... so anywhere from 45 mins to 2 hours. I don't really remember childhood naps, but those naps in college were crucial to my graduating! My favorite naps are mid summer day naps with the windows open and the fan blowing the warm air all around. I'm ready for summer!
I wasn't a napper until my son was born. When I was pregnant, every mom I knew would constantly tell me: sleep when the baby sleeps! Mothers and doctors would say this to me over and over again. And once little Kai arrived, I understood why. If you don't sleep when the baby sleeps, you ain't getting any shut eye. For the first few weeks, I'd try and do some work while he slept or attempt a little laundry, but once the extreme exhaustion hit, I had no choice but to succumb to regular naps. And though I used to struggle to fall asleep in the middle of day, I would be out cold within seconds of my head hitting the pillow. All those stories from my mommy friends were NOT exaggerated. You really DO get that tired. So, the answer is yes. I nap. And I love every minute!
